Small business is the backbone of the American economy and this sentiment rings just as true here in the 17th District. We must do whatever we can to make it easier for those that create most of our jobs to compete in an increasingly corporate environment. I believe the stability of locally owned small businesses are the key to the success of our economy.
A major factor facing small business is the rising cost of health care. That is why I will support initiatives to give tax credits to small businesses that offer health benefits to their employees. And for those self-employed individuals, they should be able to fully deduct the cost of health insurance for themselves and their family.
Finally, I agree with legislators such as Congressman Evans that the federal government must give small businesses a chance to compete for contracts. Since they have been shutout the reduced competition has increased the cost of services provided by large corporations.
