Why send me to Congress? Hare: `I know how to get things done'

I'm proud to have lived here in the 17th District all my life. My wife Beckie and I raised our two children in this community, and I want to work on this community's behalf in Congress.

Many of you know me. I'm a veteran. I'm a union member from a working family. For more than 23 years I've worked serving this community alongside Congressman Lane Evans.

I'm running for Congress because I want to continue to work for each of you and for our community's future.

My top goals include:

-- Health care for every American

-- A real prescription drug bill for our seniors

Hare on health care, RX, and retirement

By Phil Hare

Health care, prescription drugs and Social Security are top issues people raise with me. I share the concerns so many of you have and I want you to know where I stand on each issue.

-- Social Security:

Social Security is the main source of retirement income/security for so many in this district. I support Social Security and I oppose risky privatization schemes. I want to fully fund Social Security and guarantee benefits for those who rely on it, and for future generations. I won't compromise when it comes to protecting it.

Social Security provides guaranteed benefits for 48 million Americans, is projected to have a surplus of funds until 2026, and has enough to pay full benefits until 2040. We need to fund it and protect it, not dismantle it or take money out for other agendas, like privatization. Rather than permanent tax cuts for millionaires, costing taxpayers $2 trillion, I'd use that money to guarantee Social Security for current/future retirees for generations to come.

Hare: Winning war on terror a national priority

By Phil Hare

I'm proud to be an American, and of the response our country and military have had since 9/11. The 17th Congressional District understands what it means to serve. We have a rich history of distinguished military service by men and women, young and old, from our community.

We've lost some of our best to this war and others. I served in the United States Army as a Reservist alongside our most committed citizens. I know what it means to wear this nation's uniform. I've always put my country before my political party. I pray every day for our troops and for their families and I will always honor their service.

How to feed a district starving for infrastructure dollars

By Phil Hare

Securing federal transportation dollars for projects that create jobs in this area will be a main focus of mine in Congress. Transportation funding also helps our local economy and benefits commuters. I want to focus my work here and in Congress on addressing the sizeable and diverse transportation needs of this district.

We need to make it easier for people to get to work, school, visit with family and friends and do business. Congressman Lane Evans always recognized the importance of transportation and, during the more than 23 years I worked with him, we successfully partnered with the community, organized labor, local officials and businesses to secure millions of federal dollars for key transportation projects in this area. Those dollars translate into good, secure, local jobs and we need more of them. I have a proven track record of helping to deliver federal resources and I want to build on that record as the representative for the 17th District in Congress.
